I've been birding 27 years. I've worn out 5 pairs of binoculars and lost another. My last pair was dropped on the deck so many times there was 3 tablespoons of seawater in one lens of the (formerly) waterproof binoculars after one particularly wet trip! Two previous pairs corroded due to salt spray.



As a professional seabird guide, I take my binoculars to sea 8-10 times per year under often adverse conditions. Rain, wave spash, salt spray, chum--my optics are smeared during a trip. A $1500 pair of binoculars will not give any better view under those conditions than a cheaper pair. I needed a new pair, but if I dropped them overboard I didn't want it to be a life-altering experience!



Thus, I was looking for binoculars in the $250-300 street price range. There are so many to choose from. I wanted very good optical qualities, ruggedness, waterproof, nitrogen purged, standard-sized roofs. I wanted them to be quite good binoculars even on land.



When I got down to it I settled on 2 binoculars. This one and the

Eagle Optics Ranger SRT 8x42 Binoculars.



I chose the Bushnell Legend for the Rainguard feature, which is supposed to shed water off the lenses with just a shake--a great feature at sea, and it seems to work great! It has the added benefit of only having a street price of $210.



I'm sure the Eagle Optics Ranger SRT is an equal binoculars. It is slightly less heavy (21.8 oz compared to 24.5 oz of the Legend). It focuses closer for butterflies. It came recommended by other seabirders for mid/low priced but higher quality waterproof roofs. It costs a bit more, at about $330 street price. I'd be happy with either pair, I am sure.

The image clarity and light-gathering of these binoculars is fantastic! These are a massive step up from cheapy binoculars without having to spend exorbitant amounts of money. They also include a case, shoulder strap, and a lens-cleaning cloth.



My only complaint is that putting the shoulder strap on makes fitting the binoculars back into the case a bit more work, but who really cares if the product works?

They work wonderfully during low light which will be great in Africa since we are out early in the morning and late in the evening. I've had a couple seasons with these binocs, very happy with the results. I've left them onboard with damp, hot, cold conditions... no problems at all. Still amazed how they allow you to focus near or far without a zoom-function. Not sure how they did it, but they work. Others who tried them on my boat like these too.

I was hesitant to order these because binoculars are so varied in price and quality it is difficult to buy them without trying them out first. I have a pair of 12X50 Pentax that I paid over $200 for but these Bushnell binocs exceed them for clarity and quality, and priced at half the Pentax. I do a lot of fishing so I am out on the ocean waters of S.E. Alaska almost every day, and these 7X50 Marine work perfectly on the water. I especially like the built in compass which can be illuminated at the press of a button for near dark navigation. Just the right choice for boat use. Gathers light for a clear view better than some more expensive binoculars. The rubber armor is good for grip and protection. I bought these for triangulating my position on charts while sailing. I was a little worried that the internal compass would be hard to read as my 40+ year old eyes need reading glasses to read newspapers, computer screens etcetera. I have had no problem whatsoever. The compass is large and easy to read. The compass has an internal light which is a great added feature. I did an overnight sail in March and would have had a very difficult time guessing where I was without this feature. I never use the reticle for judging distance. I suppose I could get the instructions out to do the math but it hardly seems worth it because the compass allows me to locate my position very easily.

I normally wear glasses for distance...I don't need them when using these...Everything is always perfectly in focus--instantly--no knobs or adjustments to mess with. Great wide angle for sporting events, 10X power brings everything in real close...

Yes, I agree with the folks who claim these won't focus on things within a few feet (using them at the Rose Bowl, the effective limit seems to be about 15-20 rows in front of me or closer), but who uses binoculars to look at things close to you? At the Rose Bowl, my seats are in Row 40 and, from where I sit, these are incredible...I can follow the referees' first down measurements on the field almost down to the number of chain links...But, again, what really makes these is the lack of any required adjustment and the uncanny way they instantly adjust to my eyes--or to anyone else's regardless of whether they wear glasses or not...

I will never buy any other type of binoculars again.

We just got these for a trip to Alaska. I LOVE them! They are so easy to share. The sharpness of the image is AMAZING! My Dad wears glasses and I don't. No problem. We can both see CLEARLY! If you want to catch something in the binoculars quickly without fooling around trying to focus... this is it. We live on a lake and we always have something in the wild to catch our eye. This has been very beneficial to have the focus there at all times. They are a bit bulky and somewhat heavy but an excellent pair of binoculars. The "shake" with the power is not bad like we thought it would be. I can not say enough about Bushnell as a company. They support and back their products like I have never seen in ANY other company. I will ALWAYS buy this brand from now on because of this.

I agree with reviewer Steve - anything less than a few hundred feet and these binocs are worthless. The paper works says the "may" focus down to 35'. Maybe some will but not certainly not my pair. I am returning them since they are not good for simple viewing around the yard. And no, the rubber eye caps ABSOLUTELY will not stay back making these binocs almost unusable by people with glasses (like me).

The Bushnell Perma Focus 7x50 Wide Angle Binoculars were the ideal choice for my recent trip to Tanzania and the Serengeti. They worked perfectly for the application needed. A really happy surprise on just how well these worked. As we bounced around on dirt roads and cross country in Land Rovers, the Perma Focus feature was outstanding and made things simple and easy! :-) The magnification level was perfect for almost every scenario we came across. Anything that was outside of about 80 feet came through in crystal clear vivid color and clarity. It really made for up close and personal viewing of all the animals we saw. By far, these were the best investment I made before the trip! I can't imagine being without them now on such an expedition. Really fantastic performance and a great value to boot!!!! I have compared many binoculars before purchasing this pair and have no regrets what-so-ever. They are a great all-purpose binocular. The 7x magnification along with a larger 50mm aperture gives a very clear image, even indoors.
I regularly take them to hockey games and the wider field-of-view keeps the action in your sight.
The perma-focus keeps images sharp. Remember that they are set assuming you are looking through with at least almost 20/20 vision so you can not use them without corrective lenses.

First of all, I'm a huge Julia fan, have owned this book since 1973, and saw the movie on opening weekend. I have also been to culinary school and own shelves full of cookbooks. I sometimes spend an entire day planning and cooking dinner. I have to say, however, that all of the gushing about this book surprises me. I have a 48" professional range and cupboards full of pots and pans, and I often run out of stovetop space and cooking vessels while preparing some of her recipes. I'm of the "fine ingredients cooked with respect" school of cooking, and Julia most often cooks her vegetables to death, and I'm not sure "medium rare" is in her vocabulary. Her pastry is to die for, her bread (vol 2) is heavenly, and the chocolate almond cake featured in the movie is one of my all time favorite cake recipes. The instructions in the book are clear, and I'm assuming that they have been updated since my edition was published. By all means this cookbook should be in your collection, but if you're looking for a cookbook with the best sauce instructions, I would choose the little gem from Williams Sonoma that is just sauces with wonderful photos of the whole process, and if you want French flavor with a more modern approach, I'd suggest Ina Garten's Barefoot in Paris. Her beouf is wonderfully tasty and takes just one pot. I'm not a fan of the 30 minutes till dinner cookbooks, but Mastering the Art of French Cooking is not the first cookbook I'd choose for a beginner. And if you're going to eat from Julia every night, be sure to serve French portions as well as French food.

I give this book kudos for being a page turner and for having a really neat concept done quite well. My problem with this book is that character development. The book coins itself as an epic love story, and yet I never really feel the love. The emotions and the reasons behind them do not seem very real. For this reason, I never really fell in love with the characters like I have in other "romance" novels like "The Notebook."

The format of the novel is that of reading journal entries for the two main characters, Henry and Clare. Since time travel is involved, the entries are listed giving the date and the age of the characters, however, not in chronological order. This provides the reader with a feel for the spontaneity of time travel. The novel is neither boring nor predictable. I found that the journalistic format allows the reader to develop a personal understanding and an attachment to the characters and to the unique situation they endure throughout their lives. Without giving the story away, I'll say that I enjoyed it immensely - it kept my interest, kept me reading long after I should have been asleep, and had me going through a full range of emotions. The characters had a deep love for one another, but I can't imagine trying to sustain a relationship under the hardship created by time traveling. All in all a very good book. Well-crafted writing; the author fills the book with detailed descriptions that create visions in the reader's mind. The author has given the timeworn idea of a romance novel a unique twist for the enjoyment of her readers. You won't go wrong with this book. It's a keeper.
