I was looking for some binoculars for general use, and hunting, and wanted something as good as I could get for the $, and found it in these. On paper, these are basically the same thing as the e2's (both have Fully multi-coated lenses with Bushnell's XTR coating, BaK-4 prisms, PC-3 phase coating and Rainguard) but the Discoverer's are half the price. The only thing that I've found to be a big difference in the two is the weight of the Discoverer, which is not a big deal for me...even for hunting use. I recently had a chance to take them hunting, and didn't notice the weight, but did notice the great clarity and brightness of the unit. BTW, buy them while you can...seems that they're getting harder to come by.

I bought these binoculars for use as a beginning backyard astronomer. They seem to be a good bargin for the price. Focus at all ranges is fast and images at all ranges are clear and crisp with no blurring. This is true both for landscape and celestial observing. Images are perhaps not quite as bright as they would be with a Nikon or Leupold,but for the money, they're a great deal.

"Good only if more than 100 yards" 2005-02-23

The Bushnell Permafocus 12x50s do not show as much detail as a pair of 7x35 binoculars for objects less than 100 yards away because the 12x50s are not in good focus at 100 yards, and uselss at less than 50 yards. Bushnell deserves a "booo-hisss" for hiding this information from customers. The minimum usable distance probably varies with the ability of the user's eye to focus (this decreases with age) but mine are probably about average. Also, the inside instructions indicate Permafocus binocs are good at less than 100 ft, depending on the model. This is not true for the 12x50s. Most inexpensive 7x35s will give a better view at 300 feet and less.

But if objects are over 200 yards, the 12x50s are in focus and flawless as far as i can tell. I can easily recognize people at 700 yards. I can read license plates at 350 yards (it helps if the binoculars are resting on something to prevent vibration).

Without a support, there's probably too much shaking for 16x50 binocs to do much better than 12x50s.

The eyepiece rubber does not stay rolled back (if you try to use them with glasses) for more than 1 second, so you can't wear glasses while using them, but as with other binoculars, you do not need to wear your glasses. I don't know the science behind it, but whether or not you wear glasses does not seem to make a difference with the Permafocus. The rubber around the eyepieces cannot be removed unless it's cut.

In summary, the normal Bushnell 12x50s are probably much better than the Bushnell Permafocus 12x50s because they can be used at much shorter distances and focusing on objects greater than 200 yards should not be too much of a pain. These 12x50s are no good unless your typical viewing distance is greater than 150 yards and you don't plan to use them on less than about 60 yards. I'm returning them due to "manufacturer's defect".

But concerning the Permafocus idea: I love my old pair of "total focus" 7x35's for bird-watching and carrying in the car. Being free of focus is a different experience almost as big as going from monocular to binocular. But you need a pair that can focus down to 50 yards.

I've owned several Elite binoculars since 1990 and have used them a lot. Six months ago, I purchased the new 8x43 Elites and have found that Bushnell has done an excellent job with this completely redesigned binocular.

One great feature is that they are so lightweight that you hardly notice them around your neck. They are also remarkably compact and they have the look and feel of quality. The new open double-hinged design looks great and this binocular feels good in the hands. I normally don't care for thumb grooves, but the grooves on these Elites are symmetrical and shallow and feel fine to me (much better than some earlier Elites in this regard).

The focusing mechanism of a binocular is critical, and the Elite is very good in this regard. The focus wheel is large and it turns very smoothly and easily right out of the box. It does take approximately 1.75 rotations of the focus wheel to go from 8 feet to infinity. From 30 feet and beyond you'll barely notice this feature, but focusing on a bird (or anything else) that is in close requires a fair amount of wheel turning. I would prefer a quicker focus, but it's not a major drawback- especially considering how good this binocular is in all other respects.

How do they stack up optically? I think they are really very good. The image is sharp and bright and the field of view is adequate. In an informal side by side comparison with the Nikon Venturer (widely regarded as one of the best), I was hard pressed to detect any difference in image quality. I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the view through these Elites.

In summary, this is a really nice binocular. They are expensive, but they sell for significantly less than a number of other high end models. Considering the great ergonomics, 'weatherproofness', state of the art design and materials and excellent optics, this new Elite is a great offering at a very competitive price. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting a top of the line binocular for birding or any other use where top quality optics are desired.

I've had this binocular for several years and LOVE it! The extra wide view is the cat's meow when you're trying to see the big picture! It's easy to focus; has the extendable pieces to protect my glasses lenses; and provides a very clear view. The only thing I've used it for is to watch the critters in and near the water (whales, eagles, etc.), and it is everything I've always wanted in a binocular! I've always had trouble focusing and finding things with the bigger binoculars that don't show much through the lenses.

I was on vacation, but got an idea to replace the part with a sturdier makeshift pin and it performed its job very well. I would give this a 1 rating but outside that issue it functioned well, but if you're not into a challenge when it breaks, don't buy.

These are great binoculars! The binoculars are of the quality you would expect from Bushnell. The digital cameera is fantastic. We went to Alaska and now hav wonderful up close photos af whales, eagles and a rarely seen black fox. Also we now have a wonderful close-up of Ichiro blown up and posted in our son's bedroom. The one downside is you have to hold it steady. Some of the photos in Alaska were taken while rafting and they were blurred. We aren't big bird watcher fans....but I imagine this would be fantastic for bird watchers! Great Binoculars! I highly recommend purchasing a gig or more storage card as you will need it for lots of photos. Download and working with the photos are a snap. This was fun and a great product.

The optics used in these binoculars are semi-sharp in the middle and blurry around the edges, the quality of the images lack contrast and the life of the camera can be measured in weeks. Avoid Bushnell products in general. The optical quality has been horrible in every pair of binocs I've ever purchased (though I did like one of their easy focusing systems). On one pair, the images didn't even line up and it's not worth the postage to have them returned.

"Did not live up to the hype..." 2009-04-17

I was very disappointed with these binoculars from the moment I took them out of the box. Overall, they felt to me to be much of much less quality than the previous reviews led me to believe. I found them to have a nice and acceptable image when used , but because of the casing I found the binoculars to be very uncomfortable to handle. The strap and case I found to be cheaply made, as well. I also found that the only rubber protection is the green colored casing. The black is hard plastic which I feel will be vulnerable to damage when used. I have since found a much better pair of compact binoculars, the Pentax UCF-R, which I enjoy much better and I feel are much better made. The Alpens have since been re-gifted!

The sky's the limit price wise for spotting scopes but this scope is very reasonably priced.I use this one for zeroing in my rifles at 100yds and it works great for me. "Excellent optics with a fatal flaw." 2009-10-07

The optics on this spotting scope are very nice, especially for its price. The picture is relatively clear from edge to edge, the focus is good, and the brightness doesn't suffer too much at full zoom. Much clearer than the Leupold Sequoia 15-45x60 and comparable to the more expensive Nikon Prostaff 16-48x65. Optical quality is good enough that you'll spend more time worrying about heat and atmospheric distortion than lens distortion, which is good enough for me.

Major problem: balance. The hole for the mounting screw is 3.5" from the front lens, making the whole thing unbalanced and back-heavy which becomes important when you're aiming. You'll lift the back, un-tension the tripod swivel, nudge the scope up or down a few degrees, re-tension the tripod swivel again, and when you take your hands away the whole thing sags backward significantly. You end up having to aim low and hope you've aimed low enough. The problem is exacerbated by the cheap stock tripod, but I'm pretty sure it would still have this problem even with a decent tripod. If they'd just put the mounting point in the middle of the scope at its center of gravity it wouldn't have this problem.

Minor problem: stiff focus knobs. Other spotting scopes' knobs are small and can be operated with a light touch. This one's quite a bit heavier, and it's easy to nudge the scope off axis while focusing especially with the heavy

4 stars: 5 stars for the superb optics and 3 stars for the terrible balance issues. So close and yet so far from an otherwise reasonably priced and close to perfect product.

"Best Price Point!" 2008-02-22

I was looking for the best price point in a relatively small but big enough to hold roof prism binocular for all around use--travel, hiking, birdwatching, and so on, and these Bushnell "Excursion" 8x28 Compact Roof Prism Binoculars are what I came up with.

Comparing them directly with other similar binos at a local retail store these jumped out at me and said, "Here I Am!". Ok, I over exagerate, but talking is about the only thing these binos don't do, and do well. They have the look and feel of similar styled binoculars costing literally $100's more. Very good optics, very bright, very clear. With 3.5mm Exit Pupils they are relatively easy to align with the pupil of one's eye. Some of the lesser compact binos can be very persnickety in this regard. Twist Out eye cups work great. With 28mm Lens and "Fully" multicoated as well they are much brighter than one might think under low light conditions. That they also have "PC-3" phase coating and Bak-4 Prisms simply puts these binoculars over the top. Binoculars with these features for less than $100 is simply amazing.

Other features include a very nice neck strap. Actually has some width and padding to it. It also has quick release fasteners that make it very easy to take the strap off the binos if you want to. You will not need to get a nicer strap so that you are comfortable as is the case with many other binos. Both the Ocular lens "Raingard" cover and the Objective Lens covers are tethered to the binos. Very slick. The focusing wheel is large and very responsive. With 15mm eye relief they should work with most glasses or without with a simple twist of the eye cups. They feel secure in their extended non-eyeglass position. Something that cannot be said for some of the push up style eye cups that tend to collapse. The binos also come with a semi-hard case that is very nice, imo. It is divided and has room for a notepad and pencil and cleaning supplies. Very, very nice, imo.

These should make a great pair of easy to carry binos that one can take just about anywhere for just about any purpose and look good doing it. Did I mention they are both Waterproof and Fogproof--O-Ring Seals and Nitrogen Purging...

As an aside. Not that it proves anything, but, Bushnell is the largest Optics company in the world. In fact, Bushnell has the largest market share in "all" of the sports optics categories.

In my opinion, after quite a lot of research online and hands on at my local Bass Pro, for the money the Bushnell "Excursion" line of binoculars simply cannot be matched, let alone beat.. Lifetime Warranty.

The Bushnell Sentry 12-36 scope provides fair views at 12x in good light, but at higher power the eye relief diminishes rapidly and it becomes unusable to someone wearing glasses and difficult to use without glasses. I was looking for an easy to carry alternate for my 82mm Kowa scope. I intended to use it on a gunstock mount or monopod to get quick views of birds that were too far for my 10x binoculars. I did not find it suitable for this purpose. It comes with a very practical "scope glove", a soft case, and a hard case worthy of a much better instrument. Perhaps Bushnell would have a better product if they had omitted the hard case and spent the money to provide better optics.

As previously stated in another review I repaired optical equipment for the Navy for 15 years. I bought the binoculars for my son as a shot in the dark due to the $100 price tag hoping for the best. What I found was a great pair of binos that hold their own against very expensive binoculars. They were so good that I bought another pair for a friend that can afford anything he wants. My friend compared them to his $1200 pair of binoculars and the brightness and clarity was right along the line of the high dollar pair. The quality was to the point that his brother in law asked to borrow them on an elk hunting trip. They were so impressive that he asked me to get a couple more pairs to keep around his ranch. Granted you always get what you pay for when it comes to optics. These a great buy! If you would loose them, get them stolen, or drop them repeatedly to the point that you can't see out of them it is no great loss. Buy a new pair for a hundred bucks and don't feel bad.

I have been very pleased with these binoculars since I bought them. While they are not perfect, they are an excellent value for the price that I paid. The view that these give is excellent and I believe that they would be good for just about anything from sports to nature to concert viewing. The optics do show some pincushion distortion when looking up at something like buildings and the like. There is a minor amount of red fringe showing in some views. However, this is fairly common in binoculars, from my limited experience, and the only way to eliminate this kind of minor optical problem would be to spend a considerable amount more that this model costs. I like the fact that these are built tough enough to be used in almost any circumstance. Since my children are still small, I like knowing that they can use them without me having to constantly watch how they handle them.

This is an outstanding adjustable objective scope for air guns. It is properly designed to take the abusive double recoil of spring piston air guns that destroys scopes costing 5 times as much.

Comes with scope rings and all-weather caps. I was unable to use the caps because the large diameter front objective did not leave enough clearance between the cap and the receiver.

Gloss finish looks beautiful on my 1970's Feinwerkbau 124 blued air rifle. I think it's also available in matte finish if you have one of those hideous flat black plastic guns.

With minimal zeroing, I was shooting 1cm groups at 10m. Too early to tell if it will drift since I have only shot about 50 rounds since mounting it.

Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's made in China.

I have taken this out in the mountains with me on hikes. It has a rubberized coating and focuses very easily. Sharp images and since it is 50 mm it is good for dawn and dusk viewing. Great value.

"Great binoculars" 2008-04-05

I love these binoculars. As soon as I got them I went out and bought the battery and a memory card for it. Then I took a walk through the park and shot some pictures with it. They are not crystal sharp pictures, but they're not bad either. For the fun of it, I took a video clip of the flag blowing in the breeze. I stood about 70 yards away from it when I did this, and it came out very well.

Keep in mind that whenever a picture is taken from far away, even with a zoom, you will lose quality then if you took a picture close up. For the price, this is a good item. I am rough with my stuff, so I was happy to see that this is well made.

I think this is a great buy for the person who loves to hike and doesn't want to lug both a camera and binoculars with them. This is a two in one deal and well worth it.

"Great low cost binoculars!" 2009-05-31

I bought these binoculars at a local warehouse store. It was an open package kind of deal, and the cost was about $25 US.

Pros: I am a casual birder and like many of my age, I use eyeglasses. Many binocular manufacturers/sellers advertise that their binocs can be used by eyeglass wearers by folding back the flexible eye cups, but in about a half dozen tries, I have not found a pair that are satisfactory for use with eyeglasses. Until now. Unlike the others that I have attempted to use, these binoculars have eye cups that rotate axially and move the eye cup about 1/2" (13mm) in and out, such that when the eye cups are rotated to their base position, there is (finally) adequate eye relief to use them comfortably with eyeglasses.

For the pair that I own, I would rate the optical performance as very good. I have some Nikon binoculars ($200+) but I like these little Bushnells much more. The 8x power is just right for being able to hold a (reasonably)steady image just using hands. Performance at twilight is great.

Cons: I can't think of any.

Finally: For $50 binocs, I would recommend these highly. Especially for those who wear eyeglasses.

I ordered 5 pairs of these binoculars and am very happy with the quality for the price. We are going on an Alaskan Cruise with our children aqnd grandchildren(age 11 and 8) and have been advised to bring along binoculars to use on the ship. These fit the bill. They seem sturdy and are fairly lightweight for small hands. The product arrived just as promised with no problems.

The image posted is the Tasco Offshore 21 Marine Binocular. These are outstanding binoculars and I have had a pair for 4yrs.

I have a friend who is off on a sailing trip this week and so I ordered a pair here as a parting gift. They arrived yesterday and guess what??...The item shipped is an inferior unit.. the Tasco Offshore 19.. manual focussing and less sharp and bright. I have no time to have the item returned and the correct part delivered so I am decidedly unhappy.

If you read buried in the details of the item listing it says OS19 but pictured is the OS21 so i ask you... how do you spell FRAUD?

Short of a pair of Fujis costing twice as much, I can't think of a better choice for the outdoorsman or boater. I have a pair I've owned for about three years now that always accompany me in a boat.

There are a lot of binoculars advertised as "waterproof" that will fog up in a moderate downpour- including some cheaper units sold under the Tasco label. But these are the real deal. Complete waterproofing, individual eye focusing, and built-inprotective eyepiece and objective lens covers. Nothing to fall overseas or get lost in the lockers. You can also get a slightly pricier version with a built in compass.

They're sharp and contrasty- more so than most inexpensive binos- shock resistent, waterproof and small enough to be handy. A good value all around. Certainly the best choice in boating glass.

"Good for the price but some essential parts not replaceable" 2008-06-08

This is a good binocular for the price, but I found out that with the low price comes at least one essential weakness. Somehow the post that slips into the binocular body and attaches to the shoulder harness broke. Well, I thought, thank God for the Bushnell Lifetime Warranty... Only thing is, that item is not covered if Bushnell decides you handled the thing too roughly and, not only will they not fix it for you, but they don't have a replacement! So I am relegated to forever using my Bushnell Excursions without a shoulder-harness or any kind of carrying strap!

The binoculars arrived broken -they were cracked near the point where they pivot. Not sure if this was a product defect, due to very rough shipping/handling, or someone else had purchased the product and returned it broken which the store did not catch before they sold to us. In any case, the fact the binoculars were broken speaks clearly as to the poor manufacturing/quality control.

In the future, I will cross Bushnell off my list of acceptable brands.

I bought these binoculars because I wanted a medium size pair to use primarily for birding. First time out, I had difficulty getting a clear focus. To make maters worse, every bird that I looked at had a halo of red chromatic aberration around it's head. I have a pair of Nikon 10X25s which out performed the Bushnell's hands down in terms of both clarity and sharpness. I am returning the Bushnell's and considering the Audubon Equinox HP binoculars instead.

...unless you want to have trouble focusing, have difficulty using them indoors at a sporting event, or have the neck strap bracket break off, etc. I wear glasses and these never did focus well for me. I was not happy when the bracket broke off the day I received them, just as I was to leave for an Africa safari vacation. The biocs kept slipping off my neck the whole trip, and it was frustrating.

Even more frustrating was trying to get them repaired. Suposedly there is a warranty on these. Hah! When I sent them to Bushnell for repair, they wanted [...].

I purchased a coupe of other makers scope only to find poor performance at the shooting range. I quickly return, but couldn't find anything to fill my need of seeing smaller details at 200-300 yards or at least at a price under $300. I purchased this as a last chance before I emptied my wallet and glad I did. It gives good detail and brightness, the best bang for the buck I've found. I'm mean it's no $700 spotting scope, however its soild construction small, light weight, I'm happy !

This is my second Bushnell scope, a bit more powerful than the 1st. i use it to monitor an eagles nest here in NE Ohio. LOVE the adjustable eye piece. at max(60x) image not as clear as I would have hoped, but all in all a very good scope for the money !!!
